Holiday Gift Guide Recessionista

On the fifth day of the Holiday Gift Guide, WhoWhatWear.com gives to thee, seven super presents fit for any style queen! (click image to enlarge)

(Forgive us, dear readers, we couldn’t resist making at least one partridge-in-a-pear-tree reference, but no more of that, we promise.) In today’s installment of the guide, we’d like to turn your attention to a certain type of person you all undoubtedly know: The Recessionista.

The Recessionista is definitely the most daring of our Gift Guide types. She always has at least one cutting-edge element in any given outfit, is fearless about taking fashion risks, and probably has her own blog (featuring photos from her preferred collections, of course). Today’s subject knows that you don’t have to spend a fortune to look fantastic (so she’s always got the inside scoop about which designers are doing collaboration lines with H&M and Target), and adores little luxuries (like the key beauty product used in her favorite fashion show). With all of the above in mind, we found some on-trend gifts that are totally budget friendly, too. We promise they’ll please both The Recessionista and your wallet! Finally, since we’re all a bit recessionista-ish these days, feel free to shop the story for yourself as well. Everything’s under $100, so they’re essentially guilt-free indulgences!

On that note, we’re pleased to officially conclude our Holiday Gift Guide—at least for the ladies! We’ve got one last present-related story coming up next week and it’s jam-packed with thoughtful surprises for all the fellows! Watch this space...

The fall shows were lousy with super gorgeous jewelry, but of all the many choices, the universally most-desired item is definitely the chain necklace. We found a particularly thrilling version at Marciano; their multi-chain, multi-metal version is a fresh interpretation of the trend and perfectly suited to the Recessionista’s tastes.

Mango Crita Bag ($59)
A good-looking, great-priced bag is always hard to come by, but Mango might have a solution with their Crita Bag. The chain-and-leather strap bag has interesting stud-details on the side and a price that’s simply perfect.

Influence by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen ($25)
It’s a pretty safe bet that most Recessionistas have looked to Mary-Kate or Ashley Olsen for outfit ideas at least once in their lives (if not every day). Hence, we must recommend this covetable coffee table book by the Sisters Olsen. Influence is a tribute to the people who’ve inspired the actresses/designers/style icons and sure to be a much-enjoyed gift.

Where would a Recessionista (or any of us) be without Topshop to turn to? The high street hotspot offers some of the best fast fashion around, like this fun fuchsia tank dress. The bold color and animal print combo is not for wallflowers, but that’s not really an issue for today’s giftee, is it?

The other piece of apparel we wanted to showcase is also from Topshop. Though it definitely makes a more subtle statement than the aforementioned bright pink frock, the Balenciaga/Rick Owens-inspired cut is equally trendtastic.

Shiseido Hydro-Powder Eye Shadow in Proenza Schouler Blue ($23)
While there’s been much buzz about the black lipstick shown at YSL, we think the Recessionista would rather have the pretty peacock blue shade of eye shadow used at Proenza Schouler. Dick Page, the beauty maestro who created the look for PS’s fall runway show, crafted this stunning product, which is available in limited quantities at Sephora! Be sure to nab yours now, before they sell out forever...

No doubt the Recessionista is obsessed with all things designed by Riccardo Tisci, so why not give her something to sate her fixation like these Givenchy-inspired platform sandals? Bakers version of the bondage-style footwear reminds us of the strong shoes spotted on Gwyneth Paltrow and Carine Roitfeld, albeit at a much better price point.
