Safari Chic

In particular, we’re currently channeling Grace Kelly and Ava Gardner’s style in the very gorgeous 1953 movie, Mogambo.

The classic film takes place Kenya and the plot is set in motion by Ava Gardner’s character, who is on the hunt for a different sort of "big game" than one might associate with a safari. Specifically, she’s tracking a rich man, and naturally high jinx ensue when Gardner gets tangled up with Clark Gable and Grace Kelly. Plot aside, both actresses wear exemplary versions of safari chic ensembles and should be your muses for this look. You can also check out the spring runways of Bottega Venetta, Versace, and Donna Karan for their modern versions of Mogambo.

The pieces we pulled for today’s Currently Channeling can be easily introduced into just about any wardrobe (no pith helmets are involved, we swear), like the Oversized Safari Cardigan by 3.1 Phillip Lim ($640). The camel color is a universally flattering neutral and you can also button the whole thing up and wear it as a sweater dress. You can also try the Suzie Shirt Dress ($24.80) for a similar shape.

Another easy way to get the Mogambo look is to procure a shoe with sturdy straps. For example, the nude patent leather and stacked heel of the above Steve Madden Simmerr Sandal ($109.95) combine no-fuss natural color with utilitarian style. Finally, for those of you who just want a hint of the savannah try an armful of bracelets like Kenneth Jay Lane’s Striped Wood Bangle ($45) or the Larchmont Wood Bangle ($5.80) from Forever 21. We also adore Kenneth Jay Lane’s Wood Teardrop Earrings ($45) for that subtle safari look.
