We don't know about you, but bikini waxing is the bane of our existence.
Unfortunately, it's also a necessary evil on hot summer days. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to make the hair-razing experience less frightening.
To start, avoid harsh waxes that may irritate your skin. Try using an organic brand instead. "A lot of synthetic waxes have mineral oils," says Venice Beach, California, aesthetician Elisha Reverby, who has created her own at-home kit. "You're trapping moisture, which can clog pores long term."
Also steer clear of spas that practice double dipping, where the same pot is used on different customers—a definite no-no in the beauty biz. "People say the wax kills bacteria, but if the wax were hot enough to kill bacteria, you'd get third-degree burns," says Reverby.
To get your bod beach-ready at home, follow these simple instructions:
1. Make sure your hairline is scrubbed clean.
2. Use baby powder to absorb sweat and oil.
3. Put a cool compress dipped in aloe vera in the freezer.
4. Apply wax to the sides and then underneath the bikini area in small patches. "Pull your skin with one hand so it's taut," advises Reverby. "Pulling the skin will make it hurt less and gets the hair out from the root."
5. Never repeat waxing. Ever. "Get one good pull," says Reverby. "If you missed a little bit of hair, just leave it alone. Don't keep going over an area, because it will bruise your skin."
6. Pull your cool compress out of the freezer. "That area is going to be tender," warns Reverby. "Everyone gets inflammation after waxing, but a cold compress will help reduce swelling."
